Jesus proving He *is* God

Hello
brothers and sisters in Jesus/Yeshua (and friends),
What
this document tries to do is to show, from the New Testament – specifically the
four gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This is not an exhaustive list,
but it has most of the easy ones to show what Jesus said. Along the way, you
will see us add little “>>Highlights”
where we note something key in the passage we just quoted, so that (hopefully)
as many can catch the truth Jesus just stated as possible. But most of what you
are about to see is just quotes from the Bible, using the American dialect
version of the 400 year old British dialect, the KJV. This document is not to
be sold – only to be used as a free teaching resource.
What
we hope this document (study, resource) does for you is to encourage you with
the very Words of God to see that Jesus Himself claimed to be and proved He is
God, in complete contradiction to the liars we find today who fill many pulpits
at the state-church (501c3s). Jesus is God – there is none other. And there is
no other way to pay for sin, except by the shedding of sacrificial blood – done
perfectly by the pure and spotless Lamb of God who came to take away the sins
of the world, to all who receive Him and make an eternal salvation covenant
with Him so they might inherit eternal life and be adopted children of God.
If
you have any questions, please feel free to email, call, comment, or message
and I (or we) will be glad to help as time and life allow. If you’d like to
know more about Jesus and some of the prophecies He fulfilled that also prove
He’s the Jewish Messiah, please email me: Steven.H3@gmail.com.
In
time, God-willing, I intend to someday have a study on Jesus being God, proven
from the many Old Testament prophecies (given by God) that Jesus fulfilled in His
coming (New Testament) as a baby, His growth, life, teachings, activities,
fulfillments of 5 of the 7 Jewish Feasts, and in His death, burial, resurrection,
appearing to the more than 500 witnesses, and the ascending into Heaven until
it’s time for Him to return (in the sky for the “rapture”) and then to come to
Earth one last time conquer satan once and for all, at the end of the literal
7-year Tribulation, and set up the 1000-year reign, then the final Judgment,
then eternity in His ever-unfolding, ever-growing future pure, holy and
exponentially beautiful Kingdom, of which there will be no end – forever, and
ever. Amen. We look forward to those
final days, but until then, we work – seeking out how to serve Jesus by showing
His love to people and sharing Jesus’ teachings with all who will hear us.
Another
hopefully future study would be about the many times Jesus appeared to people
on earth *before* He added a body to Himself and “tabernacled” among us, in
fulfillment of the Jewish feast of Sukkot (or Feast of Tabernacles) and found
in John 1:14.

Matthew
Matthew 8:23-34
“23 Now when
He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a
great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves.
But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Lord,
save us! We are perishing!’ 26 But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful,
O you of little faith?’ Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and
there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, ‘Who can
this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?’
“28
When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes,
there met Him two demon-possessed men,
coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that
way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, ‘What have we to do
with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the
time?’ 30Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine
feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, ‘If You cast us
out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs.’ 32 And He said to
them, ‘Go.’ So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And
suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the
sea, and perished in the water.
“33
Then those who kept them
fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the
whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.”
>> Highlights:
Two events here – calming of the stormy Sea of Galilee, and the driving out of
the demons into a herd of pigs, or swine. Both events show Jesus being God –
claiming to be God, and doing things that only God can do.
Matthew 9:1-7
“1 Then Jesus got
into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. 2 Then behold,
they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He
said to the paralytic, ‘Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.’ 3
And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, ‘This Man
blasphemes!’ 4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you
think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven you”, or to
say, “Arise and walk”? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man
has power on earth to forgive sins’--then He said to the paralytic, ‘Arise,
take up your bed, and go to your house.’ 7 And he arose and departed
to his house.”
>> Highlights:
Jesus here heals a man and forgives him – only God can do that.
Matthew 12:1-8
“1 At that time
Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were
hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And
when the Pharisees saw it, they
said to Him, ‘Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the
Sabbath!’ 3 But He said to them, ‘Have you not read what David
did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he
entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to
eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or
have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple
profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that
in this place there is One
greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned
the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’"
>> Highlights:
Here, Jesus is clearly claiming to be the Lord of Lords, and yes, Lord of the
Sabbath.
Matthew 16:13-21
“13 When Jesus came
into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’ 14 So
they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah
or one of the prophets.’ 15 He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ 16 Simon
Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ 17 Jesus
answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon
Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My
Father who is in Heaven. 18 And I also
say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the
gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and
whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in Heaven.’ 20 Then He commanded His
disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ. 21 From that time
Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer
many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and
be raised the third day.”
>> Highlights:
This is one rare conversation we see in the Gospels, where Jesus is putting His
disciples through some critical thinking. They have, by now, seen months of
miracles, heard amazing teachings – all things that only God in human flesh
could do. And here, with His 12 and probably a few other trusted disciples, He
confirms that He indeed is God, and the Christ… and then teaches them something
they still don’t know how to understand – that He’s going to die in our place,
to pay for the willful sins of those who repent and put their trust in Him.
Matthew 16:22-28
“22 Then Peter
took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, ‘Far be it from You, Lord; this
shall not happen to You!’ 23 But He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get
behind Me, satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the
things of God, but the things of men.’ 24 Then Jesus said to
His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his
life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his
own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For
the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then
He will reward each according to his works. 28 Assuredly, I say to
you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the
Son of Man coming in His Kingdom.’"
>>
Highlights: Jesus rebuking satan with some familiarity
in rebuking and restraining him. Jesus also references this in Luke 10:18, and
we see it in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 as well. Jesus then teaches, again (as
Jesus had been teaching these things for months now and the disciples were
still trying to grasp it) the core teachings of the salvation covenant and the
requirements for salvation and a changed heart, and then Jesus gives a prophecy
that He will return in the glory of His Father – claiming to be God. And, then Jesus
gives a promise/prophecy that very soon, some of the 12 disciples will see
Jesus in His glory – referencing the “Transfiguration” that we see in Matthew
17:2 and Mark 9:2, witnessed by Peter, James, and John. That was when Jesus
glowed, showing just some of His glory, that He set aside to come to earth to
die for us (Philippians 2:6), to save all who receive His salvation covenant.
Matthew 26:59-66
“63 But Jesus
kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, ‘I put You under
oath by the Living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!’ 64
Jesus said to him, ‘It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you
will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty God, and coming
on the clouds of Heaven.’”
>>
Highlights: The phrase there in the Greek for “It
is as you say” would be more properly translated with several phrases, the
phrase “I AM” as noted in the other gospels, is a correct translation. The
phrase also means “It is exactly like you said, and you already know that” in
addition to the “I AM” implication. Also, you can see that He claimed to be God
in many details there, by the reaction of the Scribes and Pharisees – they wanted
to kill/murder Him because He exposed their evil deeds, but pretended it was
because He supposedly “blasphemed” by being God and claiming to be God, and
proving it by His many miracles. Every time the Scribes and Pharisees pick up
stones or try to murder Jesus because He claimed to be God, they emphasize that
He was clearly saying and proving that He is God.
Matthew 26:59-66
“59 Now the chief
priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus
to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Even though many false
witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came
forward 61 and said, ‘This fellow
said, “I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.”’ 62
And the high priest arose and said to Him, ‘Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?’
63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to
Him, ‘I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ,
the Son of God!’ 64 Jesus said to him, ‘It is as you said. Nevertheless, I
say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of
the Mighty God, and coming on the clouds of Heaven.’ 65 Then
the high priest tore his clothes, saying, ‘He has spoken blasphemy! What
further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! 66
What do you think?’ They answered and said, ‘He is deserving of death.’"
>>
Highlights: Here we see one of the kangaroo
court scenes with the Scribes and Pharisees trying to murder Jesus by false
accusation… and then asking Jesus, under oath before God, who He is, and He
explains in clear and short words that He is God.
Mark
Mark 2:5-11
“5 When
Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son,
your sins are forgiven you." 6And some of the scribes
were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 "Why does
this Man speak blasphemies like
this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 8 But immediately,
when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves,
He said to them, ‘Why do you reason about these things
in your hearts? 9 Which is
easier, to say to the paralytic, “Your
sins are forgiven you”, or to say, “Arise, take up your bed and walk”? 10
But that you may know that the Son of Man has
power on earth to forgive sins"--He said to the paralytic, 11 I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house."
>>
Highlights: Who *can* forgive sins except God
alone? No one, only God. Here in this passage, Jesus proved three ways – 1)
claiming to be God, 2) forgiving sins, and 3) healing along with the forgiving
of sins, proving that He is God and forgave the sins.
Mark 2:23-28
“23 Now it happened
that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His
disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the
Pharisees said to Him, ‘Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?’
25 But He said to them, ‘Have you never
read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him:
26 how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high
priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat, except for the
priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?’ 27 And
He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not
man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore
the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.’”
>>
Highlights: Jesus teaching the hard-of-hearing
Scribes and Pharisees that He is the Lord, including of the Sabbath.
Mark 4:37-41
“37 And a great
windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already
filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they
awoke Him and said to Him, ‘Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?’ 39 Then
He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace,
be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But
He said to them, ‘Why are you so fearful? How is it
that you have no faith?’ 41 And they feared exceedingly, and
said to one another, ‘Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!’"
>>
Highlights: Jesus has power of the wind and
seas, because He is God. Just another proof.
Mark 8:22-26
“22 Then He came
to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him.
23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town.
And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he
saw anything. 24 And he looked up and said, ‘I see men like trees,
walking.’ 25 Then He put His
hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw
everyone clearly. 26 Then He sent him away to his house, saying, ‘Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.’"
>>
Highlights: The reason Jesus had to command them
not to talk about this healing of the blind man, is because they realized He is
God and were going to spread the info because of their excitement.
Mark 11:27-33
“27 Then they
came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief
priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. 28 And they said
to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You
this authority to do these things?" 29 But Jesus answered and
said to them, "I also will ask you one question;
then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:
30 The baptism of John--was it from Heaven or
from men? Answer Me." 31 And they reasoned among themselves,
saying, "If we say, 'From Heaven,' He will say, 'Why then did you not
believe him?' 32 But if we say, 'From men' "--they feared
the people, for all counted John to have been a prophet indeed. 33 So
they answered and said to Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus answered
and said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what
authority I do these things.”"
>>
Highlights: Here again, Jesus stumps the Scribes
and Pharisees in their trickery. They come up to Him with a trick question, and
with a very harsh tone, just after He has cleared the Temple of their
money-stealing schemes. Jesus asks them to tell whether the teaching of John
the Baptizer and his baptism were from God, or from men. They refuse to answer
Him, and He refuses to answer them, but then goes on to warn against the cruel
hypocrisy of the lying Scribes and Pharisees.
Mark 14:61-64
“61 But Jesus kept
silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, ‘Are
You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ 62 Jesus said, ‘I AM. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right
hand of the Mighty God, and coming with the clouds of Heaven.’ 63 Then
the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘What further need do we have of
witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?’
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.”
>>
Highlights: Here we see clearly Jesus using the
God’s Name phrase: I AM. Jesus always has been God.
Luke
Luke 4:16-30
“16 So He
came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went
into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And
He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book,
He found the place where it was written: 18 "The Spirit of the LORD
is upon Me, Because He has
anointed Me To preach the
gospel to the poor; He has sent
Me to heal the brokenhearted, To
proclaim liberty to the captives And
recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." 20 Then
He closed the book, and gave it
back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the
synagogue were fixed on Him.
“21
And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is
fulfilled in your hearing." 22 So all bore witness to Him, and
marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said,
"Is this not Joseph's son?" 23 He said to them, "You
will surely say this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have
heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.' " 24 Then
He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own
country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in
the days of Elijah, when the Heaven was shut up three years and six months, and
there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of
them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in
the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the
Syrian."
“28
So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled
with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they
led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might
throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of
them, He went His way.”
>>
Highlights: This is in Nazareth, the town Jesus
grew up in. They knew Him, but they didn’t want to obey or follow Him. Jesus
taught them, and they partially listened. Then He rebuked them for shutting
their ears and closing their eyes, and the leaders drove Jesus to the edge of
the cliff the town was built on… and then Jesus froze them. They literally
couldn’t do any more than that. Jesus walked right through them, giving one of
the loudest, softest and most gracious rebukes they would ever hear. You know
some repented and followed Jesus from this town, especially after His
crucifixion and resurrection.
Luke 5:4-11
“4 When He had
stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out
into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5 But
Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and
caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." 6
And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and
their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to
come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began
to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me,
for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" 9 For he and all who were with
him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and
so also were James and John,
the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men."
11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook
all and followed Him.”
>>
Highlights: Here Jesus shows Jesus that He is
God in a most dramatic way – 1) knowing where the fish were, 2) giving a large
catch during the daytime, and 3) giving the largest catch of fish Peter and
Andrew, James and John had *ever* seen… not just little fish – large fish and
the boats were filled to the point of sinking… that is why Peter responded this
way, realizing that He was in the presence of God, his heart having been
softened by the teachings of Jesus He heard for hours before.
Luke 5:20-26
“20 When He saw
their faith, He said to him, ‘Man, your sins are
forgiven you.’ 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to
reason, saying, ‘Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but
God alone?’ 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered
and said to them, ‘Why are you reasoning in your hearts?
23 Which is easier, to say, “Your sins are
forgiven you”, or to say, “Rise up and walk”? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth
to forgive sins’--He said to the man who was paralyzed, ‘I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.’
25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been
lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And they
were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, ‘We have
seen strange things today!’”
>> Highlights: Again,
claiming to be God, forgiving sins, and healing to prove the sins were
forgiven.
Luke 5:30-32
“30 And their
scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, "Why
do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31 Jesus
answered and said to them, "Those who are well have
no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the
righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
>>
Highlights: The Scribes and Pharisees trying to
wrongly judge Jesus, and He uses the opportunity to explain that He is God
looking for repentant sinners to save.
Luke 7:18-30
“18 Then
the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And
John, calling two of his disciples to him,
sent them to Jesus, saying,
"Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" 20 When
the men had come to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You,
saying, 'Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?' " 21 And
that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and
to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to
them, "Go and tell John the things you have seen
and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to
them. 23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of
Me." 24 When the messengers of John had departed,
He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: "What
did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25
But what did you go out to see? A man
clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in
luxury are in kings' courts. 26 But
what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a
prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send My
messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.'
28 For I say to you, among those born
of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is
least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29 And
when all the people heard Him,
even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of
John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of
God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.”
>>
Highlights: Here we see Jesus commending John
the Baptizer and helping his disciples, and John, to see that Jesus is the
Messiah. In the details, you see how many miracles and things that He did,
again proving that He is God. But… one of the saddest verses ends this passage –
the Scribes and Pharisees rejected the will of God for themselves, rejecting
their need to repent, and hardening their hearts in sin… may we learn from that
and use it to warn others not to reject repentance and the grace of God.
Luke 7:40-50
“40 And
Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have
something to say to you." So he said, "Teacher, say it." 41
"There was a certain creditor who had
two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42
And when they had nothing with which to
repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him
more?" 43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose
the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have rightly judged." 44 Then
He turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you
see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she
has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her
head. 45 You gave Me no kiss,
but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46
You did not anoint My head with oil, but
this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are
forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same
loves little." 48 Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 And
those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is
this who even forgives sins?" 50 Then He said to the
woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”"
>>
Highlights: Here we see Jesus speaking with a
Pharisee, and whoever joined him, showing that He is God by forgiving her sins
and teaching on repentance and forgiveness.
Luke 8:22-25
“22 Now it
happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He
said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side of
the lake.’ And they launched out. 23 But as they sailed
He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. 24
And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are
perishing!’ Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And
they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 But He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ And they were afraid, and marveled,
saying to one another, ‘Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and
water, and they obey Him!’"
>>
Highlights: Again, Jesus commanding His creation
to be still and calm, then rebuking His disciples and teaching them that they
can and need to trust Him.
Luke 9:23-36
“23 Then He said
to them all, ‘If anyone desires
to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow
Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what
profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or
lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the
Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His
Father's, and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are
some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Kingdom of God.’
“28
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took
Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 As He
prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. 30 And behold, two men talked with Him,
who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of His
decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 But
Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake,
they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.
“33
Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here;
and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah’--not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a
cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the
cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My
beloved Son. Hear Him!’ 36 When the voice had ceased, Jesus was
found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the
things they had seen.”

Jesus will testify against those who reject Him as God and Messiah. Jesus
transfigured – quite an amazing scene and the only time Jesus did this, and
only for Peter, James and John.
Luke 12:8-9
“8 Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him
the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9 But he who
denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.”

Highlights: Who would speak “before the angels
of God”? In fact, where would that be? That would be before the Throne of God,
and only God can do that. Here again, Jesus is claiming to be God.
Luke 20:9-19
“9 Then He began to tell the
people this parable: "A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to
vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at
vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him
some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again
he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And
again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out. 13 Then the owner
of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably
they will respect him when they
see him.' 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among
themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the
inheritance may be ours.' 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard
and killed him. Therefore what
will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and
destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others." And when they
heard it they said,
"Certainly not!" 17 Then He looked at them and said, "What
then is this that is written: 'The
stone which the builders rejected Has
become the chief cornerstone'? 18 "Whoever falls on that
stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to
powder." 19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very
hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people--for they knew He
had spoken this parable against them.”

told against the evil members of the Scribes and Pharisees teaching them and
the people that they were about to murder the Son of God, and claiming equality

He is saying He is God, because they want to murder Him, but can’t get around
the people to do it.

Highlights: One of the most amazing replies of
Jesus – also found in Matthew 20:23 and Mark 12:36. Here Jesus proves from one
of their common and often-taught passages about the Messiah… that they were
looking for the wrong Messiah, and that He (being Jesus) equal with God, and
God.
John
John 1:1-18
“1 In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2
He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made
through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In
Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There
was a man sent from God, whose name was
John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the
Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light,
but was sent to bear witness of
that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man
coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world
was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He
came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as
many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to
those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And
the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John
bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said, “He who
comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.”’ 16 And
of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For
the law was given through Moses, but
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen
God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He
has declared Him.”

Highlights: The Book of John is full of Jesus’ “I
AM” statements and claims and proofs to be God in the flesh, as well as others
testifying that Jesus is the Christ. Here is one that explains Jesus’ purpose
here on earth.
John 3:1-21
“1 There
was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This
man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a
teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is
with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of
God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be
born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be
born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to
you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of
God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I
said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where
it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from
and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."
“9
Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things
be?" 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the
teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most
assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen,
and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you
earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you Heavenly
things? 13 No one has ascended to Heaven but He who came down
from Heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in Heaven.
“14
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must
the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him
should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved
the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did
not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world
through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not
condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not
believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And
this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved
darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For
everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest
his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth
comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been
done in God."

Highlights: This passage is so rich on the
teachings about being “born again” – something that has been very watered down
today. But, Jesus’ words are quite clear. You also see the Triune God mentioned
at least once (verse 11). You also see Jesus giving a prophecy that He is going
to die on the cross. You also see Jesus’ love for people and prediction/explanation
of being rejected and why He is being rejected. So much depth here. Verses 16
through 21 are some of my favorites to preach and teach and explain on the streets.
John 4:1-42
“1 Therefore,
when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized
more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not
baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed
again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the
plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now
Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It
was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw
water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For
His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then
the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a
drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with
Samaritans.
“10
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God,
and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and
He would have given you living water." 11 The woman said
to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where
then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our
father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his
sons and his livestock?" 13 Jesus answered and said to
her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but
whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the
water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up
into everlasting life." 15 The woman said to Him, "Sir,
give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." 16
Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come
here." 17 The woman answered and said, "I have no
husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no
husband,' 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom
you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly." 19 The
woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our
fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to
worship." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me,
the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem,
worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we
know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the
hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in
spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God
is Spirit, and those who
worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The
woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called
Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things." 26 Jesus
said to her, "I who speak to you am He."
…
“39
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the
word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." 40 So
when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He
stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of
His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, "Now we
believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed
the Christ, the Savior of the world.”"

Highlights: This is a wonderful passage where we
actually get to watch Jesus share the gospel with someone, in this case a woman
who was an outcast and because of her s*xually immoral lifestyle. In it, Jesus
says very plainly that He is the Messiah. Many in these towns believe on Him
because of what the lady said to them, and what they then heard from Jesus Himself.
John 5:5-47
“5 Now
a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When
Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He
said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" 7 The
sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when
the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before
me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed
and walk." 9 And immediately the man was made well, took
up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The
Jews therefore said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath; it is not
lawful for you to carry your
bed." 11 He answered them, "He who made me well said
to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.'" 12 Then they asked
him, "Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" 13
But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had
withdrawn, a multitude being in that
place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to
him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come
upon you." 15 The man departed and told the Jews that it
was Jesus who had made him well.
“16
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him,
because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus
answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been
working." 18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to
kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His
Father, making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered
and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of
Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also
does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and
shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works
than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises
the dead and gives life to them,
even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father
judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that
all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor
the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 "Most
assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me
has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from
death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is
coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and
those who hear will live…
“37
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have
neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But
you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not
believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think
you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But
you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. 41 I
do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do
not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father's
name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will
receive. 44 How can you believe, who receive honor from one
another, and do not seek the honor that comes
from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to
the Father; there is one who
accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed
Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if
you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My Words?"

Highlights: A longer passage, but one full of
ways Jesus is saying He is God – including that He can grant eternal life.
John 6:26-69
“26 Jesus
answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not
because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27
Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which
endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God
the Father has set His seal on Him." 28 Then they said to
Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" 29 Jesus
answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in
Him whom He sent." 30 Therefore they said to Him,
"What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What
work will You do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the desert;
as it is written, 'He gave them bread
from Heaven to eat.' " 32 Then Jesus said to them,
"Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from Heaven,
but My Father gives you the true bread from Heaven. 33 For the
bread of God is He who comes down from Heaven and gives life to the
world." 34 Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us
this bread always."
“35
And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes
to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. 36
But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. 37
All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes
to Me I will by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down
from Heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This
is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should
lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And
this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and
believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last
day…
“60
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard
saying; who can understand it?" 61 When Jesus knew in
Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, "Does
this offend you? 62 What
then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It
is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak
to you are spirit, and they are
life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe."
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who
would betray Him. 65 And He said, "Therefore I have said
to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My
Father." 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no
more.
“67
Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go
away?" 68 But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to
whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also
we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God."

Highlights: This is another of the “I AM”
passages in John. It also shows the people rejecting Him, not because His
teachings were too hard to understand, but because they didn’t want to follow
Him, if it was going to require them to suffer with Him. But His closest
disciples replied that they knew He is God and has the Words of Eternal Life.
John 7:18-31
“18 He who speaks
from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who
sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. 19 Did not Moses
give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill
Me?" 20 The people answered and said, "You have a demon.
Who is seeking to kill You?" 21 Jesus answered and said to
them, "I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 Moses therefore
gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and
you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives
circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are
you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 Do
not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment." 25 Now
some of them from Jerusalem said, "Is this not He whom they seek to kill? 26
But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers
know indeed that this is truly the Christ?” 27
However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ
comes, no one knows where He is from." 28 Then Jesus cried
out, as He taught in the temple, saying, "You both
know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He
who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me."
30 Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on
Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And many of the
people believed in Him, and said, "When the Christ comes, will He do more
signs than these which this Man
has done?"”
>>
Highlights: Here we see one of the arguments
Jesus had with the common Jewish peoples, who had been stirred up and
confused/deceived by the Scribes and Pharisees. Jesus is helping them to see
that He is God, proven by healing a man on the Sabbath, and what He did was
right, and that He is God.
John 8:23-26
“23 And He
said to them, ‘You are from beneath; I AM from above.
You are of this world; I AM not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if
you do not believe that AM He,
you will die in your sins.’ 25 Then they said to Him, ‘Who
are You?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Just what I have been
saying to you from the beginning. 26 I
have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is
true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.’"
>>
Highlights: You can easily see here that in the
English, the Name-of-God phrase, “I AM” shows up 3 times. Jesus speaking very
authoritatively in warning form that they will die in their sins if they don’t
repent and put their trust and faith in the Messiah, also is Jesus saying He is
God.
John 8:54-59
“54 Jesus
answered, ‘If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is
My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55 Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, “I
do not know Him”, I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His
word. 56 Your father Abraham
rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.’ 57 Then
the Jews said to Him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen
Abraham?’ 58 Jesus said to them, ‘Most
assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’ 59 Then
they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the
temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.”
>>
Highlights: For sure Jesus did/does know God the
Father, because He and the Father and the Holy Spirit are distinctive
persons/beings, but One. You can see all three of them in the baptism of Jesus,
by John the baptizer. One of them is found in Matthew 3:13-17.
John 9:11-41
“11 He answered
and said, ‘A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me,
'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received
sight.’ 12 Then they said to him, ‘Where is He?’ He said, ‘I do not
know.’ 13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the
Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and
opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he
had received his sight. He said to them, ‘He put clay on my eyes, and I washed,
and I see.’ 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, ‘This Man is
not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How can a
man who is a sinner do such signs?’ And there was a division among them. 17
They said to the blind man again, ‘What do you say about Him because He
opened your eyes?’ He said, ‘He is a prophet.’…
“
24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, ‘Give God
the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.’ 25 He answered
and said, ‘Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I
know: that though I was blind, now I see.’ 26 Then they said to him
again, ‘What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?’ 27 He
answered them, ‘I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to
hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?’ 28 Then
they reviled him and said, ‘You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. 29 We
know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know
where He is from.’ 30 The man answered and said to them, ‘Why,
this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has
opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but
if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since
the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who
was born blind. 33 If this Man were not from God, He could do
nothing.’ 34 They answered and said to him, ‘You were completely
born in sins, and are you teaching us?’ And they cast him out.
“35
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He
said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of God?’ 36 He answered and
said, ‘Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?’ 37 And Jesus
said to him, ‘You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.’ 38
Then he said, ‘Lord, I believe!’ And he worshiped Him. 39 And
Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not
see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.’ 40 Then
some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to
Him, ‘Are we blind also?’ 41 Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind,
you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains.’”
>> Highlights:
This is an incredible passage. Jesus did something no one else could do – even the
proud Scribes and Pharisees – opening the eyes of a man born blind. This man
obviously feared God, which is also why Jesus healed him. Then God let this man
preach to the willfully blind religious leaders about their intentional
hardness of heart in rejecting God, and trying to use their “good works” to
bribe God.
John 10:24-30
“24 Then the Jews
surrounded Jesus and said to Him, ‘How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are
the Christ, tell us plainly.’ 25 Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My
Father's name, they bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I
said to you. 27 My sheep hear My
voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. 30 I and My
Father are one.’"
>>
Highlights: Jesus, again, speaking very
authoritatively as God. Who can call out people to follow Him? Who can give
them eternal life? Who can hold them in His Hand? Who can say “I and My Father
are one”? Only God.
John 10:31-39
“31 Then the Jews
took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, ‘Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of
those works do you stone Me?’ 33 The Jews answered Him,
saying, ‘For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because
You, being a Man, make Yourself God.’ 34 Jesus answered them, ‘Is it not written in your law, “I said, ‘You are gods’” ? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the Word of God came (and the
Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you
say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are
blaspheming,' because I said, 'I AM the Son of God'? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me,
believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.’ 39 Therefore
they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.”
>>
Highlights: Here is the second part of that
previous passage, and here you see them pick up stones. Other times they wanted
to throw Him off a cliff, etc. Here Jesus makes it very clear – claiming to be
God, claiming again to be One with His Father, and explaining that the “works”
or miracles that He was doing proved that He is God. He is also rebuking them
for rejecting Him as they rejected the teachings and rebukes from God through
His prophets.
John 11:20-27
“20 Then Martha,
as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was
sitting in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus,
"Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But
even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You." 23 Jesus
said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in
the resurrection at the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in
Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you
believe this?" 27 She said to Him, "Yes,
Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into
the world.”"

Highlights: Here we see Jesus talking with one
of His more faithful disciples and claiming to be “I AM” and then the source of
Resurrection and eternal life. Shortly after this, He proved it by raising
Lazarus from the dead – same passage, just several verses later (verse 43).
John 12:42-50
“42 Nevertheless
even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they
did not confess Him, lest they
should be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the
praise of men more than the praise of God. 44 Then Jesus cried
out and said, "He who believes in Me, believes not
in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 I have come as
a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in
darkness. 47 And if anyone hears
My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge
the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that
which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me
gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore,
whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."

Highlights: Here we see some of the response to
Jesus’ teaching and miracles. Then Jesus makes an even more compelling call for
His hearers to repentant, again noting His close connection with the Father,
because He is God and speaks what the Father wanted Him to say.
John 16:25-30
“25 These things I have spoken to you in figurative language;
but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative
language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My Name, and I do not say to
you that I shall pray the Father for you;
27 for the Father Himself loves you,
because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.
28 I came forth from the Father and have come
into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.’ 29 His
disciples said to Him, ‘See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure
of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no
need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth
from God.’"

are starting to see that Jesus is God, and the coming Messiah they have been
waiting for, but they still don’t understand, yet, that He must die on the
cross.
